Kansas lawmakers won’t debate budget this week

? Kansas lawmakers won’t be debating the state budget this week.

Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt said Monday his chamber won’t take up a proposed $13.8 billion budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1.

The Republican from Independence says there’s not enough support for the spending plan or any alternative. The plan before the Senate would require $364 million in tax increases.

House Speaker Mike O’Neal said his chamber won’t debate a proposed budget, either. The Hutchinson Republican says there’s no point if the Senate won’t debate a plan.

The inaction on budget and tax issues means lawmakers are likely to start their annual spring break Wednesday or Thursday.
