Olathe ? A Shawnee man has been sentenced to nearly 12 years in jail for the death of his father and an assault on his mother.

William May, 47, was sentenced Thursday for reckless second-degree murder after an April 4, 2009, confrontation at his parents’ home.

The father, Doyle May, 71, died at a hospital. William May’s mother, Margaret May, 69, was attacked but did not require medical treatment.

Before sentencing, May said he never meant to kill his father. His lawyer sought a 38-month sentence.
