Universities gain purchasing freedom

March 23, 2010

— Gov. Mark Parkinson on Monday signed legislation giving regents universities more freedom from state regulations on purchasing.

House Bill 2433 essentially makes permanent a pilot program at Kansas University and Fort Hays State University that exempted them from most state purchasing laws. The universities said the pilot program allowed them to save $1.9 million over two years.

The measure also extends the exemption to the other regents institutions.

Logic would infer that similar savings would be saved throughout state government by providing freedom from state regulations on purchasing to other agencies. Any bills in process to accomplish that logical expansion of this wonderfully sensible action?
