KU Cancer Center gets $700K to recruit top-notch researcher

Kansas University has received $700,000 from the Kansas Bioscience Authority to support the school’s effort to recruit top-notch researchers to the KU Cancer Center.

At a meeting Tuesday in Washington D.C., the KBA board approved the funding. The $700,000 will be spent over three years to attract a scholar with expertise in cancer biomaker analysis and characterization, according to a press release from the KBA.

The researcher, who has not been named, will bring in an additional $2.85 million in outside funding and has published work and lectured internationally.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the board approved supporting two expansions for Lenexa bioscience companies.

Ceva Biomune received $700,000 to expand its manufacturing facility for the production of a poultry vaccine. SAFC Biosciences was granted $250,000 to increase production of cell cultural media that is used to make biopharmaceuticals and other products.
