KU Hospital expands size of planned medical office building
Westwood ? Kansas University Hospital intends to add a $12 million, 24,000-square-foot addition to a planned new medical office building on its existing campus in Kansas City, Kan.
The new two-story addition will be used to house an orthopedic surgery practice at the southwest portion of the building, which will be at the intersection of Olathe Boulevard and Cambridge Street. Construction costs for the rest of the $73 million building came in low enough that the area planned for future expansion could be absorbed into the existing budget, Jon Jackson, chief administrative officer for KU Hospital, told members of the KU Hospital Authority Board on Tuesday.
The orthopedic expansion will have its own entrance off Olathe Boulevard.
The entire building, with the new expansion, is scheduled to be substantially completed by summer 2011, and could be occupied by August 2011 if there are no major construction delays, Jackson said. The lobbies of the medical office building and KU Hospital’s main building will be connected by a 4,000-square-foot concourse along Cambridge street.
“This has been a collaborative effort by the hospital, the (KU) Medical Center and the University of Kansas Physicians,” Jackson told board members.
KU Medical Center is building a companion $9 million 600-car parking garage on the south side of Olathe Boulevard, which will house most of the outpatient clinical offices for KU Hospital’s practicing physicians. The garage will be paid for using parking fee revenue.
