Letter from House Speaker Mike O'Neal ( .PDF )

— Kansas’ Republican House speaker is challenging Democratic critics to file an ethics complaint against him or stop attacking him.

Speaker Mike O’Neal sent a memo to House members Wednesday, decrying what he called “vicious” personal attacks.

O’Neal is a lawyer from Hutchinson. Democratic leaders have criticized him for filing suit against the state on behalf of businesses, insurance funds and trade groups. Democrats have demanded that he remove himself and his law firm from the case, threatening “formal action.”

O’Neal said if Democrats have proof of an ethics violation, they should file a complaint with the House.

But he said he has done nothing wrong.

Aides to House Minority Leader Paul Davis, a Lawrence Democrat, said he’d not seen the memo.

Well, I'm not sure O'Neal is violating any ethics provisions. Unless just being kind of sleazy is unethical.

Someone in the GOP leadership needs to talk to this guy before he does more damage to the Party -- ooops, he is the GOP leadership.

Only one more example of immorality in government. What's happening here is immoral; what's happening to public schools is immoral; what's happening to higher education is immoral; what's happening to society's most vulnerable and incapacitated citizens is immoral. I am disgusted and have nothing more to say other than I am ashamed of and embarrassed for Kansas. No longer the laughingstock of the nation--now Kansas is the worst example of the universe for inhumanity and stupidity.

Republicans can do no wrong. They're do-nothings.

SouthWest Ks, not sure what side you're supporting. But if you're suggesting that Eastern KS is a hotbed of anti-conservatism, then I suggest you go back wherever you would be more comfortable (translation, HAPPY and arguably FREE). If that's not what you mean, then I guess we're on the same side--who knows? But bottom line: government in this state is anti-everything having to do with a gentle and progressive way of life. That does NOT make me a whiner--it just makes me have to suffer the whining of those who are selfish brutes and imagine themselves to be right.
