Prosecution seeks to keep Kansas doctor jailed

? The legal wrangling continues in the case of a Kansas doctor and his wife convicted of prescribing painkillers linked to 68 deaths.

Federal prosecutors filed a motion Monday opposing a defense request to release Dr. Stephen Schneider and his wife, Linda, from jail pending their sentencing.

A jury convicted the Schneiders last week on charges of fraud, money laundering and unlawfully prescribing drugs at their Haysville clinic.

The defense says the couple should be released pending sentencing because it believes they’ll probably prevail on their motion for acquittal or a new trial.

The government disputes that and says the Schneiders are a flight risk because they face sentences of up to life in prison.
