HUD official sentenced for fraud

? An official of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Kansas City, Kan., has been sentenced to a year in federal prison for taking about $47,000 for time he did not work.

The sentence was imposed Monday in federal court in Kansas City, Kan., against 53-year-old Herman Ransom of Olathe. Jurors convicted him in March of 10 counts of wire fraud and 10 counts of theft of public funds.

For two decades, Ransom served as Hub Director of the office, supervising 89 employees in overseeing multifamily housing for Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Oklahoma.

Prosecutors said Ransom claimed on two-week pay reports that he had worked 80 hours when he was actually on personal time off playing tennis or gambling at casinos.

Ransom earned $141,000 a year.
