Boy ordered to trial in stepbrother’s death

? A judge says there’s enough evidence to try a 14-year-old Kansas boy on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of his 9-year-old stepbrother.

The 14-year-old is being prosecuted in Saline County as a juvenile for the June 1 fatal shooting.

KSAL radio reports that District Judge Patrick Thompson bound the older boy over for trial Wednesday.

Saline County authorities have said the boys were alone in their rural Assaria home when the 9-year-old was shot. The 14-year-old called 911 and said he had shot his stepbrother accidentally, but investigators concluded it was no accident.

The trial is set for Sept. 23. Prosecutors could seek to try the teen as an adult.

The Associated Press generally doesn’t identify juveniles accused of a crime and is withholding the victim’s name because he was related to the suspect.
