Several candidates file for statewide election

? Several more candidates for statewide offices in Kansas have filed for the Aug. 3 primaries.

State Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt, of Independence, filed Wednesday for attorney general. He’ll face Junction City prosecutor Ralph DeZago in the Republican primary. The incumbent attorney general, Democrat Steve Six, filed last week.

Also filing Wednesday was J.R. Claeys, a Salina resident seeking the GOP nomination for secretary of state. Former state Republican chairman Kris Kobach and Shawnee County elections commissioner Elizabeth Ensley filed earlier for the job.

The incumbent secretary of state is Democrat Chris Biggs, who faces a primary challenge from state Sen. Chris Steineger of Kansas City.

The filing deadline is Thursday.
