Lawrence man accused of following woman, brandishing knife
Police have arrested a 51-year-old Lawrence man accused of following a woman in her vehicle Thursday night and brandishing a knife.
The woman told officers that around 9 p.m. the man pulled out a knife when he pulled up next to her vehicle. Just before that she had stopped to ask the man directions. They were in the 100 block of Michigan Street.
Although he said he was unable to assist her, the suspect got into a car and started to follow the woman.
Officers arrested the suspect in the 1800 block of West Second Street, which is just east of the intersection with McDonald Drive. They recovered a knife and some oxycodone in his possession.
The man was booked in Douglas County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a narcotic. Cheryl Wright, a Douglas County district attorney’s office spokeswoman, said the man is expected to make a first appearance in court Friday afternoon once official charges are filed.
Police spokeswoman Kim Murphree said the victim and suspect did not know each other.
