Condemned home has no historic link
Topeka ? Topeka officials say a house scheduled to be torn down does not have any connection to a slave-era shelter and transportation network.
The City Council this week voted to allow the city to build two new homes on property believed to have a connection with the Underground Railroad.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that earlier this month a resident questioned whether the house might be an important historic structure.
City housing supervisor Warren Woodruff says the vacant house was built after the previous home was razed.
A compliance officer with the Kansas State Historical Society agreed that the home in the Highland Park area has no historical significance.
