— Two Democrats plan to run for Kansas secretary of state.

State Sen. Chris Steineger, of Kansas City, said Friday he expects to file for the office next week. He appointed a campaign treasurer this week, which allows him to raise money.

Securities Commissioner Chris Biggs says he’ll launch his campaign in the next couple of months. He appointed a treasurer last fall.

The secretary of state is Kansas’ top elections official.

The filing deadline is June 10 and party primaries are Aug. 3. Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh, a Republican, is not running.

Two Republican candidates running. They are former Kansas GOP Chairman Kris Kobach, of Piper, and J.R. Claeys, of Salina, a former CEO for the National Association of Government Contractors.

Huh? No candidates for Governor, or 3rd District Congress, or 2nd District Congress, but 2 for SOS. When did SOS become such an all important powerhouse that it's the only job worth running for?
