Lawmaker introduces bill on sex crimes
Topeka ? A Kansas House member wants to rewrite parts of a 2006 law mandating long sentences for sex offenses.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lance Kinzer said Wednesday that his proposal is a response to Kansas Supreme Court rulings last year. The Olathe Republican introduced a bill Wednesday.
In two separate cases, the Supreme Court ordered that convicted sex offenders be resentenced.
In a Butler County case, the court reversed a sentence of 25 years to life for a man convicted of attempted aggravated criminal sodomy.
The court said the 2006 law allowed the sentence for sodomy but not specifically for attempted sodomy.
In a Franklin County case, the Supreme Court rejected a life sentence for a habitual sex offender, based on how his past convictions were treated.
