Legislators advance bill to streamline distribution of aid to school districts for students receiving free lunch
Topeka ? Kansas House members are trying to clean up the process for awarding extra aid to school districts for students who receive free lunches.
The House advanced a bill Thursday requiring districts to provide better documentation on the number of students who qualify for free lunches. Kansas uses eligibility in determining that a student is “at risk” of having academic problems.
Districts receive about $1,800 from the state for every free-lunch student. The money is used for after-school programs, tutoring and other efforts to help at-risk students perform better.
Officials estimate the better numbers required by the House bill could save the state $3.29 million a year.
