House gives preliminary OK for Kansas universities to bypass purchasing requirements

The Kansas House gave preliminary approval to a bill that would free regents universities from state government purchasing requirements.

Kansas University and Fort Hays State University have already been participating in a pilot program. KU said the program saved the state $1 million in the last fiscal year.

House Bill 2433 would essentially expand the program to all regents schools and make it permanent.

Schools argue the measure will allow them to tailor purchasing policies to their own needs.

The legislation requires one more House vote before being sent to the Senate for consideration.
