Topeka A northeast Kansas legislator has asked the Kansas National Guard to meet with officials from Atchison and Troy about the closing of two armories.
The adjutant general is closing 18 armories because of cuts in state funding, turning them over to local authorities. The units that train at those armories are being reassigned the remaining 38 in the state.
Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting and Rep. Jerry Henry, a Cummings Democrat, will meet in Atchison and Troy officials on Feb. 15 to discuss facilities in those towns.
Bunting says the National Guard will continue to be there when communities need help, but the budget cuts make it impossible to keep all armories open. He hasn't ruled out the possibility that others could be closed in the coming year.
