Kansas City police looking to add up to 70 officers

? The police department in Kansas City, Kan., is adding up to 70 new officers and says it wants top candidates to apply.

The new positions will be funded partly through a three-eighth-cent tax increase approved by Wyandotte County voters last April. Federal money will also be used.

Police Sgt. Emmett Lockridge believes it’s a good opportunity for students, people with prior experience in law enforcement and anyone interested in serving the community.

But Lockridge tells WDAF-TV that applicants should be prepared for rigorous screening because the department wants the best possible officers.

The selection process is scheduled to begin after the new year. The new officers will have to attend the police academy after they’re hired.
