Topeka murder trial postponed for evaluation

? The trial of a 43-year-old man charged with killing a man in Topeka has been postponed so the defendant can be evaluated for a brain injury.

Stephen Alan Macomber’s trial was scheduled to begin Dec. 13 in Shawnee County District Court but has been rescheduled to begin March 21.

Macomber’s attorney Richard Lake sought the continuance in part so Macomber could undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Lake says Macomber thinks he has traumatic brain damage from having been in at least eight fights in prison. Macomber served sentences for convictions of three aggravated robberies and two aggravated batteries.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that Macomber is charged in Shawnee County with premeditated first-degree murder in the June 7 slaying of 26-year-old Ryan Lofton.
