Ousted veterinarian returns to Topeka Zoo

? A veterinarian who was fired from the Topeka Zoo has returned to work after an arbitrator ruled she should get her job back.

Shirley Llizo was fired in October after a U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection criticized her and the zoo for keeping expired medications and not maintaining adequate records.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that Llizo returned to the zoo Wednesday. Arbitrator Mark Berger ruled there was no evidence that Llizo ever used an expired medication on an animal. And he said a computer outage that destroyed records shortly before a surprise USDA inspection did not give Llizo time to recover data for the inspection.

Berger says Llizo also should be compensated for damages.

New zoo director Brendan Wiley said interim veterinarian Joe Kamer will continue to oversee care of the zoo’s giraffes until further notice.
