Interstate 70 traffic to be reduced to one lane in Topeka area

East Topeka Toll Gate Plaza

Construction will cut a portion of Interstate 70 down to one lane from Aug. 16 to Aug. 19 in the Topeka area. Westbound traffic from the Kansas Turnpike East Topeka Toll Gate Plaza to exit 364 at Carnahan Avenue will be reduced to one lane for concrete and pavement repair work. The speed limit in the construction area has been reduced to 55 miles per hour for the duration of the work.

Drivers can expect some minor delays, and the Kansas Department of Transportation encourages drivers to use alternate routes when possible. More information about the project can be found at www.ksdot.org/topekametro/laneclose.asp.

I would love to be able to take an alternate route. Unfortunately, the Kansas Department of Transportation has been performing simultaneous construction on the I-24/40 interconnect between Kansas City and Topeka, narrowing it to one half lane, while a bridge is under construction. Just a suggestion, but perhaps these projects could have been done at different times.

The KSDOT page (for which you have graciously provided a link) shows that the LJW article is factually wrong on one major point, and completely ignores another. From KSDOT:

"Westbound I-70 left lane will be closed from the KTA East Topeka Toll Plaza to Carnahan Avenue for pavement repair work beginning on Monday, August 16. Work will take place Monday to Thursday between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. each day. Project work is scheduled to be completed in early October 2010. (New 8-16-10)"

Early October is somewhat different than August 19. More importantly, your article fails to mention the work being done only during evening and night hours. To have day commuters alter their routes and schedules based on incomplete reporting is pretty irresponsible journalism, even more so when you provide a link to the correct/complete information that you did not include.
