More people rally to fund programs for Kansans with disabilities

Kansans with disabilities go by the Capitol on Thursday urging legislators to increase taxes to restore cuts to social service programs.

? About 100 Kansans with disabilities and their advocates paraded past the Capitol on Thursday to protest cuts to programs that assist them.

The Kansas Legislature has started its wrap up session but remains at odds over ways to fix a $500 million revenue shortfall.

Another rally occurred on Thursday to support services for those with disabilities. Members of the Big Tent Coalition marched past the Capitol.

The deadlock is over whether to increase taxes or cut more from nearly $1 billion already sliced from the budget over the past year.

Members of the Big Tent Coalition rallied to retain services, restore funding and increase taxes. More than 4,000 Kansans with disabilities are on waiting lists to receive in-home and community-based services.

The protest Thursday came one day after about 600 people rallied outside the Statehouse in support of the same positions.
