No major violations in Topeka Zoo report

? Federal inspectors have cited the Topeka Zoo for eight noncompliance issues but no major violations.

U.S. Department of Agriculture inspectors who visited the zoo this week cited it for issues such as not maintaining a care protocol for all animals and denying a hippo access to its pool.

David Bevens, a spokesman for the city, says the officials are pleased with the results of the latest inspection at the troubled zoo.

But Bevens says the zoo still has work to do to recover from previous inspections that criticized the zoo for numerous animal deaths. The zoo’s accreditation was tabled by The Association of Zoos and Aquariums for a year, and most of its management left or was fired.

Five people are being interviewed this week and next for the zoo director’s job.
