19th Century soldiers buried at Fort Leavenworth to be identified

? For more than a century, the names of 62 frontier Army soldiers have been unknown as they lie in rest at Fort Leavenworth’s cemetery.

The Army closed Fort Larned and transferred the remains in 1888, a standard practice when posts were abandoned. The remains were exhumed and reburied, but not individually identified.

This weekend, those soldiers who died over a 19-year span at Fort Larned in southwest Kansas will be identified. A new bronze monument will be dedicated with the names of the soldiers, giving them recognition for their service.

Most of the men died of diseases that today wouldn’t be fatal but were on the remote Kansas prairie. Historian George Elmore says about 15 percent of those who died were killed in action with Indian tribes.
