Topeka ? Kansas saw a slight decrease in schools and school districts making adequate progress on improving test scores in 2008-09.

Education Commissioner Alexa Posny said Wednesday that 87.6 percent of schools and 88.5 percent of districts made the state’s achievement targets for math and reading. That compares to 90 percent of schools and 92 percent of districts in 2007-08. In 2006-07, the figures were 89 percent for both schools and districts.

Among the districts failing to make adequate progress were Kansas City, Topeka and Wichita, among the largest in the state.

The goal is to reach 100 percent of proficiency among all students in math and reading by 2014 under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

In Lawrence, all schools except Lawrence High School made adequate yearly progress. Lawrence High missed because one subgroup — students with disabilities — didn’t reach the AYP standard.
