Topeka ? Several killings of newborns have prompted Kansas’ attorney general to promote a state law granting immunity to parents who give up their infants.

Attorney General Steve Six notes that the “safe haven” law, also known as the Newborn Infant Protection Act, applies when a child is 45 days old or younger.

It prohibits a parent from being prosecuted for child abandonment if their infant is unharmed and they leave it with an employee at a fire station, hospital, clinic or local health department.

Spokeswoman Ashley Anstaett points to the case of a Doniphan County woman sentenced to 15 years and six months in prison last year for killing her infant. She said Six’s office is handling two other cases.

The law was first enacted in 2000.
