— The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to buy easements on up to 1 million acres of intact, native tallgrass prairie in Kansas to establish a conservation area.

The goal of the proposed Flint Hills Legacy Conservation Area Initiative would be to maintain wildlife habitat. The agency says parts of the Flint Hills are being lost to commercial and residential development.

The voluntary easement program would cover parts of 14 counties.

Hearings are planned next week in Alma, Wichita and Cottonwood Falls to solicit comments and answer questions from the public.

The feds have no money, so, they get a loan from the federal reserve and buy it, then sell it to China, then pay off the loan and take a trillion dollar hit on the loss. Effing geniuses!

Better to buying Flint Hills Land than:

The republican party are masters at putting millions upon millions upon millions of people out of work. All they do with a remarkable degree of consistency is wreck the economy, initiate huge movements of shipping jobs abroad aka the Reagan-Bush Global Economy and try to wreck social security and medicare.

Is there a definite pattern? Absolutely!

Thank God, let's hope the gov buys up more land and preserve it especially if the crap building build west of Manhattan in the hills spreads like the cancer that hit Lawrence.

Since many large tracts of Flint Hills acreage is owned by greedy, absentee and corporate landowners (see the Bass Bros.) who burn the pastures every single year and then over-graze them, I'm for it.

  12. straightforward (anonymous) says…

So because private individuals/corporations own land, the government should too? Where's the logic in that?

This sort of "preservation" was a leading cause in driving up real estate values in California. Look at any map and observe all the protected areas surrounding Los Angeles and San Francisco. It artificially inflates land prices making it impossible for average Joes to afford a home unless some bank gives them a neg-am loan.

And Merrill, I thought people always said Bush was an idiot. If he has gotten away with all that then he must not be as stupid is they think.
