— Kansas Lottery officials are urging holiday shoppers against buying lottery tickets for people under 18-years-old.

This is prompted by concerns about adolescent problem gambling. A recent study showed that one in five high school students received one or more lottery tickets or scrach cards as gifts. Eighty-six percent of those came from family members.

Lottery products are reserved for those 18 and over.

“Although we make it clear to players in Kansas that no one under the age of 18 can buy our tickets, it’s important to reiterate that parents shouldn’t give lottery tickets to kids as presents,” said Ed Van Petten, Executive Director of the Kansas Lottery.

“Holiday-themed scratch-offs are a popular gift this time of year, but they should only be gifted to people who are old enough to play legally,” he said.

In light of the state budget crisis and lack of revenue, perhaps it would be better if they suggested getting children addicted to gambling as young as possible. Most three year olds can scratch off lottery tickets, and hey, if they win, money for college.

My grandpa got coffee at a local gas station every morning. Every time we went to visit, he would have scratch tickets for each of us grandkids. It's one of my favorite memories.

The state should focus on bigger issues (i.e. budget and revenue), and spend less time playing nanny.

This is nothing more than a CYA by the gaming industry to avoid public backlash down the road about the negative affects of gambling.
