The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve will offer special tours of its recently acquired bison herd on Friday.

The park, just outside Strong City in Chase County, will be offering a series of tours through the preserve’s nearly 1,100-acre Windmill pasture, which serves as the new home for the herd of 13 bison.

The park has scheduled bus tours at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday. Due to a high level of public interest in the new herd, reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling the preserve at 620-273-8494. Visitors may reserve up to 10 spaces on a bus. Buses are wheelchair-accessible. All tours are free of charge.

Bison viewing is also available through backcountry hiking along the trails.

The herd was recently shipped from South Dakota, where it was part of a genetically pure herd of bison at the Wind Cave National Park. Journal-World writer Chad Lawhorn and photographer Kevin Anderson traveled to South Dakota and documented the herd’s journey to Kansas.
