Abduction suspect declines to take stand in Wichita

? Closing arguments are expected to begin Monday in the trial of a Wichita man accused of abducting a Viola convenience store clerk and sexually abusing her at his home for four days.

Robert Abner declined to take the stand in his own defense on Friday, opening the door for the jury to get the case early next week. Jurors were to be instructed that they can’t use Abner’s decision against testifying against him when reaching a verdict.

The 40-year-old is accused of abducting 48-year-old Joyce Patterson last June and sexually assaulting her at his rental home, keeping her there for four days before dropping her off outside the home of her family’s minister.

Abner is charged with one count of aggravated robbery, one count of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy and six counts of rape. He was found in an Oregon motel several days after Patterson was freed.

Her disappearance sparked a massive manhunt that included TV pleas from relatives for her safe return. One investigator testified Friday that Abner saw the pleas and knew he needed to get her home.

Abner’s sister testified on Friday that he told her he had robbed a convenience store and was going to turn himself in, but he needed to go to Oregon first to “clear his head.”
