Shawnee County approves prosecutor gun ban

? Shawnee County officials have voted to prevent District Attorney Chad Taylor and his staff from carrying guns to work.

The 2-0 county commission vote Thursday opts Shawnee County out of a new state law going into effect July 1 that gives Kansas prosecutors permission to carry firearms in county courthouses.

Commissioner Vic Miller sponsored the resolution. He says there are enough safeguards in the courthouse now and he worries about increased safety and theft problems if more guns are allowed.

Taylor opposed the resolution, saying his prosecutors wanted to protect themselves coming to and going from the courthouse.
