Width restrictions imposed on vehicles and trailers on part of Kansas Turnpike

The Kansas Turnpike has a friendly warning for drivers approaching Lawrence from the east: Be on the lookout for wider-than-normal trailers.

They soon could be taking up more than one lane.

On Wednesday, the turnpike and Kansas Highway Patrol placed a width restriction on vehicles and trailers heading west on the turnpike between Bonner Springs (milepost 224) and the West Lawrence interchange, which is Exit 202.

The maximum allowable width now is 14 feet, said Lisa Callahan, a turnpike spokeswoman. That’s because some trailers hauling roof trusses have passed through a work area near the East Lawrence interchange and knocked over signs attached to a barrier wall.

Area truss suppliers have been notified about the restriction, expected to last for 18 months.

The work zone lacks shoulders, Callahan said, so drivers should be aware that some truck operators may opt to occupy two lanes.
