Parkinson upset over energy impasse

— An impasse over energy policy in Kansas bothers Gov. Mark Parkinson.

But his solutions for resolving it weren’t sitting well Friday with supporters of two proposed coal-fired power plants in southwest Kansas.

Parkinson said that if legislators can’t override a veto of a bill clearing the way for the two plants in Finney County, their supporters should realize the effort to build them is futile.

And, he said, they should allow other proposals to develop renewable energy to move forward. Such “green” measures are now part of the bill dealing with the coal plants.

But Senate Utilities Committee Chairman Pat Apple, a Louisburg Republican, said comprehensive energy policy is needed, making the provisions Parkinson opposes important.

The answer is obvious. Build them as conventional nuclear plants, with enough extra transmission capacity for wind farms to be built by others around them.
