Kansas Senate advances bill to eliminate judicial age limits

? Senators have given tentative approval to a bill that would remove the mandatory retirement age for the Kansas Supreme Court justices and other judges.

Currently, justices are appointed to the Kansas Supreme Court and stand for retention until they reach age 70. After that age, they are required to retire when they would next stand for voter approval. The bill debated Wednesday would eliminate that age limit, similar to appointments to the federal court system.

Final action is expected later Wednesday. If approved, the bill would go back to the House, which passed a version of the measure in February.
