Legislators work on new long-term transportation plan
Topeka ? Kansas legislators are working on developing a new state transportation plan to replace the 10-year program that ends June 30.
But they acknowledge they have no hope of finding the money for a long-term program.
The House and Senate Transportation committees are settling for a policy statement in favor of a new plan and starting the discussion about how to finance it.
The Senate committee had a hearing Friday on a bill raising sales and motor fuels taxes and increase vehicle registration fees to support $17.7 billion worth of spending over 10 years.
But Chairman Dwayne Umbarger, a Thayer Republican, says it will be held over study this summer and fall.
The House Transportation Committee endorsed a bill committing the state to a new plan, but with no way to pay for it.
