Agency denies holding back expense records

? Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley on Friday accused an economic development agency of stonewalling requests for information about its expenditures — a charge that the agency denied.

“It’s a pretty serious issue when we can’t just get basic information,” Hensley, of Topeka, said.

The agency KTEC, which stands for Kansas Technology Enterprise Corp., has been under the gun from Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and some legislators, who want to disband the agency and place its functions within the Kansas Department of Commerce.

With a nearly $14 million annual budget, KTEC is charged with promoting and investing in technology-based economic development.

The recent dispute is over a letter sent by state Sen. Tom Holland, D-Baldwin City, requesting information about the salaries of KTEC staff members and how the agency has spent its money.

Hensley said KTEC has refused to provide all the information that Holland has requested.

But KTEC’s board Chairwoman Linda Reinhardt said in a letter to Holland that the agency had complied with his request as much as it could.

She said KTEC didn’t have some of the information that Holland requested.

“The KTEC executive committee of the board has determined that the information we have provided is sufficient to address your information request. KTEC must be respectful of its limited resources so that it can focus on its mission,” Reinhardt’s letter stated.

But Hensley said there are numerous records that Holland has sought that have not been turned over.

He said the information is contained in public records, and he will seek advice from Attorney General Steve Six’s office on what to do next.
