Kansas House advances two pieces of abortion legislation

? The Kansas House has given first-round approval to two abortion bills, including one that would impose stricter reporting requirements on doctors doing late-term abortions.

Under the late-term abortion bill, doctors would be required to provide state health officials with detailed medical reasons why the procedure is necessary. That information also would have to be provided to the patient at least 30 minutes before the abortion.

Legislators on Tuesday also gave initial approval to a bill requiring more information be provided to women undergoing the procedure, including a chance to look at the sonogram and hear the fetal heart sounds.

Final votes are needed to send the bills to the Senate.
