Suspect in K.C. homicides charged in separate attack

? A 37-year-old man identified by police as a “person of interest” in a quadruple homicide was charged Wednesday with beating another man hours before the slayings.

The Wyandotte County prosecutor’s office said Adrian Burks of Kansas City, Kan., was being held on $2 million bond. Burks is charged with aggravated battery for an attack Monday in Kansas City, Kan., that prosecutors said they believe is related to the shooting deaths of four people — including a 3-year-old girl — later that day.

The prosecutor’s office scheduled a news conference for 9:30 a.m. today to discuss the investigation into the homicides. A news release from the prosecutor’s office Wednesday night provided no additional details.

Also Wednesday, police identified the victims of the shooting as James A. Warren, 66; Amanda J. Remmers, 21; Peggy Castleberry, 41; and her 3-year-old daughter, Juanita D. Castleberry-Bess. All were from Kansas City, Kan.

Authorities have not said what motivated the slayings. Wyandotte County Coroner Allen Hancock said the victims were shot more than once but did not have any more information Wednesday.

Burks was taken into custody Tuesday evening after a chase that began in Kansas City, Mo., and ended in Kansas City, Kan. Officers started pursuing a man driving a minivan because he was believed to be connected with the slayings, police said.

The minivan collided with another minivan and jumped a curb. Several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, swarmed the area and took Burks into custody.

Kansas City, Kan., police spokesman Sgt. Emmett Lockridge said Burks was arrested on an outstanding warrant but did not specify what that was for.

Warren’s ex-wife, Arnetta Warren, 66, said Tuesday that he often had others living with him.

Castleberry and Warren were family friends, and she had lived with him off and on through the years, according to relatives of her daughter. She and her daughter moved back in with Warren about a month ago.
