Democrats criticize Jenkins’ vote against troop funding bill

— Democrats are blasting U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Topeka, for voting earlier this week against a bill that provides emergency funding to maintain U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“By voting no on H.R. 2346, Jenkins would rather play politics than provide our brave men and women in uniform with the necessary funds they need to keep our country and themselves safe,” said Kansas Democratic Party executive director Kenny Johnston.

Jenkins said she does support the troops, but voted against the bill because Democratic leaders put in the legislation other provisions that she didn’t support, such as funds to secure a line of credit to the International Monetary Fund for loans to poorer countries hit hard by the current economic downturn.

“Congress should have parked the politics at the door and taken an up or down vote to fund our troops and nothing else, and I am extremely disappointed that did not happen,” said Jenkins, whose district includes western Lawrence.

The bill passed 226-202. Republicans were almost unanimous in opposing the measure.

Good to hear! My respect for lynn has gone up a notch!

Seems the democraps are playing the same card over and over again. Was it not the democraps whom voted against funding the troops just a couple of years ago?

  3. kansasfaithful (anonymous) says…

Thanks Lynn. Stop the welfare stimulis spending and stop funding the stimulis for other poorer countries. Besides the way this president and congress is spending we are going to be one of those poor nations.

  4. KansasVoter (anonymous) says…

Why does Lynn Jenkins hate the troops?

  5. BigDog (anonymous) says…

Thank you Lynn! It is time to stop these economic stimulus giveaways of taxpayers money. Just as when Bush was President and pork was being thrown in from both sides.... it's time to stop pork barrel spending

This IMF portion of additional spending is $108 billion. And another $7 billion for the pandemic flu.

America cannot borrow and spend its way out of debt.

  6. jimmyjms (anonymous) says…

Pilgrim, the GOP voted *for* the exact same IMF pork under Bush...why the sudden and vociferous change of heart?

  7. merrill (anonymous) says…

Too bad she did not support the bill out of concern for the troops and is not demanding that troops be brought home very soon.

The war is a huge money hole that is costing taxpayers trillions as we speak. For those that live to be disabled they will be needing money to live on for the next fifty years plus very expensive medical care. We're talking trillions of dollars. Jenkins is likely not aware of this situation.

BTW more than 5,000 USA soldiers are now dead.

    Merrill,
Now that Democrats control both chambers in Congress and the White House ..... where are they at on bringing the troops home? I haven't heard them mentioning that issue lately.

To start - In 2006, Republican senators included $4 billion for farm programs and $700 million for a railroad project on the hurricane-battered Gulf Coast to their war spending bill.

Republicans also embraced the war supplemental in 2007 — advanced by the Democratic-controlled Congress — that included an increase in the minimum wage.

Funny how when the dems do exactly what the repubs did for years, they are terrible people!!!

Repubs are showing their true face. You don't care what the issue is, you just want to vote against anything dems vote for. That's not doing what's in the best interest for the country.

How many times were dems told they weren't supporting the troops when they didn't vote for Bush's war spending because of the pork they added to the bills? Come on, this is an issue of national security. Don't you repubs love your country anymore???

Read the article below. In the past, republicans said it was immorral to vote against funding the troops.

You repubs got some explaining to do.

"The bill passed 226-202. Republicans were almost unanimous in opposing the measure."

Merrill - the Democrats don't need to even bother with Republicans. They can have whatever they want.

So, why isn't the war over and the troops coming home?

Why is "don't ask, don't tell" still in effect?

Why are all the oppressive Bush-Cheney intelligence initiatives still in place?

Ooops - looks like the voters got another hokum sandwich to eat, eh?

Hopin' for some of that change to be comin' down the road soon....

Glad Jenkins didn't vote to give away another $108 billion of our tax money!

  12. srj (anonymous) says…

I only pay attention to votes that go againt there own party, and Jenkins and Moore almost never do that. Boyda did, and look what that got her.

hey beo! you idiot cant you remember-------Was it not the democraps whom voted against funding the troops just a couple of years ago?

  14. Satirical (anonymous) says…

Republicans didn't vote for a bill that funded the troops, and a tiny amendment that made Obama President for life? What a bunch of hypocrites! I mean, they added amendments to funding the troops when Bush was in office. If they don't vote for this war bill with this amendment then they are clearly hypocrites!

Funny how the Dems criticize Republicans for doing exactly what they did themselves. flip flop, flip flop. flip flop...

May 24, 2007: Ten Democratic Senators voted against a bill to fund the troops, funding that would have expired four days later.

"Sens. Barack Obama (Ill.) and Hilary Clinton (N.Y.) were among the 14 who opposed the bill."

    http://projects.washingtonpost.com/co...

Why do our president and sec/state hate the troops so much?

  16. 75x55 (anonymous) says…

LOL! Sounds like ya'll are getting it - they're ALL hypocrites.

And some folks want to just turn over the keys of health care to these insane clowns.

    Happy days.

  17. kusp8 (anonymous) says…

I vaguely remember Democrats saying the same thing about Republican troop bills about 200 odd days ago......

  18. JayCat_67 (anonymous) says…

That's why I'm always skeptical during a campaign when the ads say, "And Senator Smith voted against (insert patriotic, noble, honorable cause here)." They never mention the extra crap that was actually part of the bill. When the moderates of both parties finally pull their heads from their sphinchters, say "screw the wingnuts" and work together, then something good might happen. I'm not holding my breath...
