El Dorado man plans to challenge Praeger for insurance commissioner position

? The owner of a south-central Kansas insurance company plans to kick off a campaign next week for insurance commissioner.

He is 63-year-old David Powell, of El Dorado. He’s seeking the Republican nomination in the August 2010 primary.

He plans to start Monday with an announcement in Overland Park and then go to Topeka to file the necessary paperwork with the secretary of state’s office and have a news conference. He expects to end his day in Wichita.

The next day, Powell plans stops in Dodge City, Hays, Great Bend and Salina.

Powell sought the GOP nomination in 2002 but lost to Lawrence-native Sandy Praeger, who was elected that November.

Insurance Department spokesman Bob Hanson said Praeger is expected to seek a third term.
