Incrementally, Gail and Kevan Vick have completely transformed the exterior spaces of their west Lawrence home.

Welcoming lampposts greet visitors at the street level, inviting them up the steps and along a winding brick path toward the home’s front door. An attractive courtyard fronts the house and offers seating among beds that boast pink Knockout roses, lamb’s ear, hydrangeas and a host of evergreens.

“Know who you are” is Gail Vick’s advice on selecting plants. As someone who enjoys being outside but doesn’t want to be a slave to her gardens, she makes landscaping choices accordingly.

Fans of outdoor entertaining, the Vicks recently converted their backyard into a functional oasis.

A multilevel deck features fashionable, comfortable seating and ambient lighting. The soothing sounds of a nearby waterfall draw the eye to a lush lily pond, a father-son installation project.

A formidable stone fireplace, nestled in a corner of the patio, expands the seasonal use of the living space.

Desert cream flagstone complements an extensive outdoor kitchen that includes a workhorse-sized grill, refrigerator, sink and considerable storage space. This area is protected from the elements by a copper-roofed overhang with recessed task lighting.

A bar area is topped with European tiles, reflective of the homeowners’ fondness for French country influences.

“Home and Away” premieres at 6:30 p.m. Monday on Sunflower Broadband channel 6.
