Basehor man hospitalized after Sunday motorcycle accident

He was taken via air ambulance to Overland Park Medical Center

July 20, 2009

A Sunday motorcycle-car crash at a major Tonganoxie intersection sent a Basehor man to the hospital.

The accident happened about 12:30 p.m. Sunday at U.S. Highway 24-40 and Main Street in Tonganoxie.

According to Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office reports, Thomas A. Bedell, 39, of Basehor was traveling west on U.S. 24-40 on his 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle when a 1989 Mercury Cougar, driven by Dawn R. Willard, 37, McLouth, failed to yield and turned onto the highway from Main Street.

Bedell was taken by air ambulance to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Bedell’s condition was not known on Monday. Sheriff's reports did not indicate whether Bedell was wearing a helmet.

Willard sustained minor injuries. She was issued a citation for failure to yield.

This is typical of every 1989 Mercury Cougar driver living in McLouth...

Maybe the punishment should be stiffer then a slap on the hand for hitting ppl on any sort of bike.

Yeah, because if the penalty was stiffer, people wouldn't go around purposely hitting people on "any sort of bike".

Obviously this was an accident. She didn't mean to do it but she did and for that she should get something more than just a citation to yield. By making steeper penalties, people will be more inclined to pay attention. I think some states have minimum fines ($1000^) for hitting a motorcyclist for any reason.

Maybe the reason this accident happened is that the speed limit through this "major intersection" is 50 miles per hour, which also extends in front of the high school, and it's a four lane highway with no stop light. There are so many accidents at this intersection that somebody is going to be killed there soon. The speed limit needs to be lowered.
