Possible plea deal in works for convicted bank robber
A man serving time in federal prison for a series of armed bank robberies in 2002 and 2003 was back before a Douglas County judge Monday afternoon.
An attorney for Jeffrey Cox says they are engaged in negotiations with the Douglas County district attorney’s office for a possible plea deal in the case.
Cox is here on a detainer from a federal in prison in Florida — which means local prosecutors have 180 days to try him.
Judge Sally Pokorny set a preliminary for Aug. 11, in case the two sides do not reach a plea agreement.
Charges were filed locally for the additional two bank robberies he’s accused of here, which federal prosecutors did not pursue as part of a federal plea deal. In one of the cases, Cox is accused of firing a gun over tellers’ heads.
Douglas County prosecutors accuse Cox of a Dec. 10, 2003, heist at University National Bank, 1400 Kasold Drive, and the June 9, 2003, robbery of Douglas County Bank, 711 W. 23rd St.
