Portrayal will center on 19th century Lawrence Journal editor

? A historian will give a first-person interpretation of a 19th Century Lawrence Journal editor during an event Thursday in Council Grove.

Kenneth McClintock will portray T. Dwight Thacher, former editor of the paper, when Thacher spoke to a crowd in Topeka on Kansas Day 1886. It was the 25th anniversary of statehood.

McClintock’s portrayal will occur along with other events at the Kaw Mission State Historic Site’s annual Celebrate Kansas! day. Thacher was a delegate to one of the four constitutional conventions that argued in favor of Kansas becoming a state.

An open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Guests will be greeted and served refreshments by Friends of Kaw Heritage members dressed in period clothing. Live music will be provided by accordion and fiddle players. There also will be a free quilt show on display. Helen Ericson of Emporia will display her extensive quilt selection.
