A.G. raises $203K for 2010 campaign

? Attorney General Steve Six raised more than $203,000 last year for a campaign to hold onto his office, with more than half coming from the legal profession.

About a third of his cash contributions came from outside Kansas.

Six, a Democrat, filed a report this week with the secretary of state’s office listing donors to his campaign fund. The report said his campaign spent less than $16,000 during the year, leaving a balance on Dec. 31 of almost $188,000.

He was appointed attorney general in January 2008 by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to replace fellow Democrat Paul Morrison, who resigned because of a sex scandal only a year into his four-year term.

Six hasn’t confirmed that he’ll run for a full term, but his fundraising suggests he plans to do so. “He’s focused on protecting Kansans and improving the office,” said spokeswoman Ashley Anstaett.

No Republican has announced plans to run, but Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt, of Independence, is widely seen in GOP circles as a potential candidate.

Christian Morgan, executive director of the Kansas Republican Party, said Six’s aides portray him as apolitical, but he has embarked on “the usual liberal AG money grabs.”

Six raised more than $112,000 last year from attorneys, law firms and companies that provide specialized, litigation-related services to them.
