U.S. wins 60th Pancake Day Race

? A Wichita State University student won the annual trans-Atlantic pancake race on Tuesday, breaking the all-time record.

Tasha Gallegos, 22, of Liberal, won the 60th Pancake Day Race with a time of 57.5 seconds, beating the winner of the British leg by more than four seconds and breaking the record set in 2001 by Lisa Spillman of Liberal, who ran the 415-yard competition in 58.1.

The race pits frying pan-wielding runners in Liberal against runners in Olney, England. Jane Hughes won the Olney race in 1 minute, 2 seconds.

Liberal now leads the all-time competition with 34 wins to Olney’s 25, with the 1980 race not counting because a media truck blocked the finish line in Olney.
