Bystander dies during bank robbery chase

? Authorities in southeast Kansas say a bystander is dead after a bank robbery suspect opened fire during a police chase in the town of Coffeyville.

FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton says the suspect stole an undisclosed amount of cash from a Bank of America branch shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The robber fled in a car parked nearby. Coffeyville police began a chase that ended when the suspect bailed out of the car and started shooting.

Patton said an “innocent bystander” was killed. She had no information about the victim.

The suspect was taken into custody after a search of nearby woods. His name was not released late Tuesday.

Bank of America spokeswoman Diane Wagner says the bank is working with authorities. She had no further details.
