Stimulus could boost Internet in rural areas
Topeka ? Kansans may be able to surf the Internet faster and cheaper if Congress passes the $900 billion stimulus plan.
President Obama’s economic recovery plan allocates $6 billion to $9 billion for the development of wireless and broadband services, with most going to increasing services in unserved and underserved areas.
A PC Magazine comparison of U.S. Internet speeds in January ranked Kansas 30th, with its speed slightly below the national average and substantially behind first-place Nevada.
Obama’s plan would aid states in replacing outdated broadband infrastructure by federally funding tax and loan incentives for Internet companies that reach out with low-cost means to rural areas.
Rural residents make up about 36 percent of the Kansas population.
