Statehouse Live: Demos criticize Roberts over `Pearl Harbor” remark; Roberts says they’re offbase; Governor urges Kansans to give after toys stolen in Wichita

? Kansas Democrats are accusing U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., of comparing Senate health care reform efforts to the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Roberts’ office said that is not true.

While speaking on the floor of the Senate on Friday, Roberts said release of a government report critical of a Democratic health care bill under debate was “like Pearl Harbor — this is a day of infamy.”

Kansas Democratic Party Executive Director Kenny Johnston said, “With this irresponsible rhetoric Pat Roberts follows in a long line of Kansas Republicans who have allowed their partisanship to prevent them from addressing the challenges facing Kansas.”

But Roberts’ office said he didn’t compare health care reform to Pearl Harbor. He was discussing the report that was critical of the reform measure, his office said.

The analysis from the Office of the Actuary, which is part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said the nation’s health care tab wouldn’t shrink under the Democratic plan and that projected savings in Medicare may be unrealistic. But Democrats have said a Congressional Budget Office report is more accurate, and projects that the health care reform proposals will reduce the federal deficit and won’t drive up employer provided coverage.

Gov. Mark Parkinson and his wife Stacy said Monday they will donate $1,000 to the Toys for Tots campaign in Wichita after the warehouse there was robbed.

He urged Kansans to contribute to help “repair the damage” before Christmas.

Thieves broke in over the weekend and took more than 1,000 toys, valued from $10,000 to $20,000, authorities said.

Of the robbery, Parkinson said, “That’s really about as low as you can get.”

The governor’s office said those wishing to donate to the campaign should go to the Toys for Tots website at toysfortots.org.
