County to reconsider raises in wake of state budget cuts

Douglas County commissioners will take one more look tonight at their budget decision to give county employees a 1 percent cost-of-living raise for 2010.

Commissioners in July budgeted $167,418 to cover a 1 percent raise, known as a COLA, for employees. It appears that state budget problems could play a factor in whether commissioners change their minds.

“We’ve just learned recently about really significant state cuts that will trickle down to the local budgets, so I really am going to wait and see what the presentation is (today),” Commissioner Nancy Thellman said. “But my instinct would be to try to honor that 1 percent that we talked about.”

Late last month, Gov. Mark Parkinson announced the latest round of $259 million worth of cuts to state agencies. Thellman said she wanted to hear more about how the state’s budget situation could affect social service agencies that the county helps fund.

Every December, commissioners review consumer price index data and budget numbers as they decide whether they need to readjust how much they allocated for the COLA. Any changes would be reflected in employee paychecks for January.

When they drafted the budget, commissioners — amid the tough economic times — opted not to give themselves a 1 percent COLA for next year.

They will meet at 4 p.m. today at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.
